FEBRUARY 25th 2018 – Thank you Mr Chilcott!
Feeling even more inspired than ever to compose music for choirs after spending a wonderful day of singing with Bob Chilcott in the Kings Hall at Newcastle University.
The main focus of the day was his hugely popular ‘Five Days that Changed the World’. The 200+ strong choir rehearsed and sung the first four movements accompanied by Alison Gill on piano and Mark Edwards on timpani. Bob was particularly impressed by the very strong tenor section!

Happy New Year! Since my last post in December I’ve been busy with another new commission for ‘Sing Up’. With a short deadline and Christmas approaching, I got straight on with it and have now completed both the score and the recording! The song won’t be published until later in the year so watch this space for more details!

In contrast, last weekend I was delighted to help judge the District Final of the 2018 Rotary Music Competition at the Duchess High School in Alnwick, Northumberland.  Myself, John Casken and Elizabeth Eaton along with parents, teachers and friends were treated to a morning of fine music making. After much deliberation, the winners were selected for each category to go through to the National Finals in April. Bravo everybody!

DECEMBER 16th 2017 – BRAND NEW CHORAL SCORE NOW AVAILABLE!
This month I’m delighted to present a brand new arrangement for upper voice choir of ‘Sing a Song of Sixpence’. This has been in the making for a few years now (a bit like Winter Carol) and has finally made it’s way into the big wide world of choral music!  It would make a superb concert item or competition piece for any budding youth choirs out there! Next month my new Easter song ‘New Life Has Begun’ will be made available for schools to download via the SING UP website. Look out for that one in January! In the meantime…have a very Happy Christmas and enjoy the festivities.

Last week I was invited as a composer to present trophies and certificates at the North Tyneside Music Education Hub Annual Vocal Celebration in Whitley Bay Playhouse. One of the eight schools that took to the stage, (Percy Main Primary School) sang a shortened but lovely version of my Winter Carol as part of their chosen set! This was followed by presentations and a final joint performance of the 2017 Sing Up song ‘Let Love Shine Through‘ at the very end. An uplifting concert for sure with no shortage of proud parents!!

BRAND NEW CHORAL SCORE NOW AVAILABLE!
My latest choral score ‘The Simple Things‘ for SATB choir and piano accompaniment has just been added to this website and is now available to download!! The song which celebrates many of the simple things in life, is very singable for any 4-part choir but requires a wide range of dynamics and a good conductor to pull it off effectively!

SCHOOLS RAISE THE ROOF SINGING AT CHURCH CONCERT!
What a terrific way to conclude the schools involvement in the Horsley Pipe Organ Restoration Project. After a busy, informative and fun packed Half Term of workshops covering music, art, science and literacy, all six First schools (Bellingham, Wark, Otterburn, Greenhaugh, West Woodburn and Kielder) came together to sing my specially commissioned song ‘Stops, Pipes, Pedals & Keys” along with some Christmas carols accompanied by the newly restored organ. Holy Trinity Church, in Upper Redesdale, was filled with over a hundred young voices singing with real joy and enthusiasm, adding the actions into the song where appropriate…
THANK YOU ALL…I couldn’t have wished for better. A recording of the performance will follow shortly.

ACTION SONGS ARE BEST!
Delighted with the response from the children across 6 schools in the North Tyne Valley singing Stops, Pipes, Pedals and Keys’. No children’s song would be complete with some actions though! Here is a picture of me teaching Year 3 & 4’s at Otterburn First School how to make an ‘A’ shape for the last line of the song….’Upping and downing on the A68!’

NEW CHRISTMAS CHORAL SCORE JUST UPLOADED!
Back in 1991, I won the Colchester Institute Carol Competition with my modern version of ‘We Three Kings’. I’m ashamed to say it has taken until this week to finally make it available to the world! The carol is in 4 time and very different to the traditional tune although the words remain the same. The score for SSA, piano and sax is downloadable now and an SATB version will follow on soon.

NEW ORGAN PIECE, ORGAN RECITAL & ORGAN LESSON!
This week I started composing a new piece for saxophone and pipe organ with John Roper. I’ve never composed anything in a church before and found it to be hugely rewarding! I’ve also never worked as a composer with an organist before so that was also a wonderful new experience! Still all fired up, I then drove down to Essex to hear a special organ recital performed by Dr Gillian Ward Russell in St Mary’s Church, Frinton. This was particularly of interest to me as she performed Ten Pieces for Organ’ which she hoped would engage a new generation of listeners. I was very impressed – not only by her outstanding performance but also by her superb vocal introductions which definitely brought the concert alive! We had a lovely chat afterwards.

Later in the afternoon I was lucky enough to have a short organ lesson with my good friend Nancy Roser in St Lawrence’s Church, Little Waldingfield, Suffolk. I must say I struggled with those pedals!!

Not ONE but TWO new pieces commissioned for an ORGAN project!

Back home from touring, photographing audiences, meeting lots of lovely people, discovering new places and generally having a ball! Now my attention turns to organ music…having been commissioned by the Horsley Organ Restoration Project to write TWO new pieces of work! I’ve already composed a fun song for school children, about the journey of the Nelson organ from County Durham to Northumberland ‘Stops, Pipes, Pedals and Keys‘ and I’m soon to co-write a brand new work for saxophone and organ with composer/organist John Roper. This should be a really interesting venture! In preparation to this, I’m very much looking forward to hearing East Anglian concert organist Dr Gillian Ward Russell perform a selection of her favourite organ works in St Mary’s Church, Frinton, Essex next week. Definitely hoping to pick up some inspiration there!
5th May 2016
Always love performing Saxophone Jig in church settings – it just works a treat and the wonderful acoustic setting of St Andrew’s Church, Corbridge, Northumberland last week was no exception. Even more delighted to have sold every copy of the sheet music I took down with me! Looking forward to playing it again in All Saints Church, Winterton, Linconshire next weekend.
