FEBRUARY 25th 2018 – Thank you Mr Chilcott!
Feeling even more inspired than ever to compose music for choirs after spending a wonderful day of singing with Bob Chilcott in the Kings Hall at Newcastle University.
The main focus of the day was his hugely popular ‘Five Days that Changed the World’. The 200+ strong choir rehearsed and sung the first four movements accompanied by Alison Gill on piano and Mark Edwards on timpani. Bob was particularly impressed by the very strong tenor section!

JANUARY 20th 2018
Happy New Year! Since my last post in December I’ve been busy with another new commission for ‘Sing Up’. With a short deadline and Christmas approaching, I got straight on with it and have now completed both the score and the recording! The song won’t be published until later in the year so watch this space for more details!
In contrast, last weekend I was delighted to help judge the District Final of the 2018 Rotary Music Competition at the Duchess High School in Alnwick, Northumberland. Myself, John Casken and Elizabeth Eaton along with parents, teachers and friends were treated to a morning of fine music making. After much deliberation, the winners were selected for each category to go through to the National Finals in April. Bravo everybody!
DECEMBER 16th 2017 – BRAND NEW CHORAL SCORE NOW AVAILABLE!
This month I’m delighted to present a brand new arrangement for upper voice choir of ‘Sing a Song of Sixpence’. This has been in the making for a few years now (a bit like Winter Carol) and has finally made it’s way into the big wide world of choral music! It would make a superb concert item or competition piece for any budding youth choirs out there! Next month my new Easter song ‘New Life Has Begun’ will be made available for schools to download via the SING UP website. Look out for that one in January! In the meantime…have a very Happy Christmas and enjoy the festivities.
NOVEMBER 26th 2017

Delighted to announce that the sheet music for Restitutio et Reditio jointly composed by myself and John Roper is now available on this website! This was our first collaboration as composers and was hugely enjoyable to do! Some of the audio from a recent recording made on location in Holy Trinity Church can be heard here too!
MAY 31st 2017
I’ve just added a new piece to the CHORAL SECTION of this website. The Lord’s Prayer/Cathedral Chimes is a new setting for SATB with piano or organ accompaniment and is based on an existing piano piece I wrote a few years ago.

A very proud moment! Organist John Roper and myself with Rt Revd. Bishop Christine Hardman after the musical celebration and blessing of the newly restored Nelson organ in Holy Trinity Church.

A NEW WORK FIT FOR A BISHOP!
Absolutely delighted with the response from guests after the Celebration and Blessing of the newly restored Nelson organ in Holy Trinity Church, Redesdale, Northumberland, where organist John Roper and I performed our newly joint commissioned work ‘Restitutio et Reditio’. The Bishop of Newcastle (Rt Revd Christine Hardman) blessed the organ and spoke to us afterwards. She said she loved the piece!
APRIL 28th 2017
BBC RADIO NEWCASTLE AIRPLAY & INTERVIEW !
Tune in to Radio Newcastle on Sunday 30th April at 07.20 or 08.50am to hear a lovely feature about the Horsley Organ Project, something that I have been heavily involved with the last 18 months, both as a composer and educator. A live recording of ‘Restitutio et Reditio‘, the newly commissioned piece for organ and alto saxophone that I composed jointly with organist John Roper will be included in the radio feature along with interviews and a recording of the North Tyne school children singing my specially composed song ‘Stop’s, Pipes, Pedals and Keys’
Last week I was invited as a composer to present trophies and certificates at the North Tyneside Music Education Hub Annual Vocal Celebration in Whitley Bay Playhouse. One of the eight schools that took to the stage, (Percy Main Primary School) sang a shortened but lovely version of my Winter Carol as part of their chosen set! This was followed by presentations and a final joint performance of the 2017 Sing Up song ‘Let Love Shine Through‘ at the very end. An uplifting concert for sure with no shortage of proud parents!!
Each one with a personalised message!
MARCH 17th 2017
Congratulations to Wark C of E First School who came 2nd in the Choral Class of the Tynedale Music Festival today singing ‘Stops, Pipes, Pedals and Keys’. I was delighted they chose it as one of their performance pieces and was especially pleased to be able to accompany the song myself at The Queens Hall in Hexham. Good work everyone and well done to all the schools who took part!
Happy New Year! Quite overwhelmed by the response to Winter Carol since it was published in the ‘Sing Up’ magazine back in October! Seems it has been sung in many schools around the country. Performances I’m aware of have taken place in Nottingham, Worcestershire, Surrey, Merseyside, Suffolk, North Shields, Bromley and Sussex! Thank you to all the schools who chose to learn it – I hope you all enjoyed singing the song in whatever format you chose!
THE HORSLEY ORGAN RESTORATION PROJECT IS UNDERWAY!
So proud to be involved in this mammoth cross curricular project funded by Heritage Lottery which is making children aware of the pipe organ! I’ve been having fun sharing a selection of organ pieces and of course teaching my specially composed song ‘Stops, Pipes, Pedals and Keys‘ to the six First Schools in the North Tyne. More information about the project can be found here.
Back in 1991, I won the Colchester Institute Carol Competition with my modern version of ‘We Three Kings’. I’m ashamed to say it has taken until this week to finally make it available to the world! The carol is in 4 time and very different to the traditional tune although the words remain the same. The score for SSA, piano and sax is downloadable now and an SATB version will follow on soon.
Back home from touring, photographing audiences, meeting lots of lovely people, discovering new places and generally having a ball! Now my attention turns to organ music…having been commissioned by the Horsley Organ Restoration Project to write TWO new pieces of work! I’ve already composed a fun song for school children, about the journey of the Nelson organ from County Durham to Northumberland ‘Stops, Pipes, Pedals and Keys‘ and I’m soon to co-write a brand new work for saxophone and organ with composer/organist John Roper. This should be a really interesting venture! In preparation to this, I’m very much looking forward to hearing East Anglian concert organist Dr Gillian Ward Russell perform a selection of her favourite organ works in St Mary’s Church, Frinton, Essex next week. Definitely hoping to pick up some inspiration there!
Always love performing Saxophone Jig in church settings – it just works a treat and the wonderful acoustic setting of St Andrew’s Church, Corbridge, Northumberland last week was no exception. Even more delighted to have sold every copy of the sheet music I took down with me! Looking forward to playing it again in All Saints Church, Winterton, Linconshire next weekend.
Been extra busy this last couple of months preparing students for ABRSM exams and the Tynedale Music Festival. Delighted that all eleven pupils passed their respective grades 1 to 8 with six gaining merits! Great success at the festival too with 1st’s, 2nd’s and 3rd’s in piano, vocal, woodwind and composition classes! Well done to all involved particularly this little fella who not only got his photo on the programme cover but also won both his classes!
Delighted to have just heard that the award winning educational organisation ‘Sing Up’ have accepted my Winter Carol score and will be including it as an online resource for schools later this year!
Download your copy of WINTER CAROL from here. All proceeds support disabled children at Percy Hedley schools in Newcastle. More details of where you can hear live performances also on this page.
Thank you to BBC Radio Newcastle for playing the whole of Winter Carol on air today! To listen again to the carol and interview with Anna Foster click here. and scroll along to 01:10:40 (Available for 28 days).
A huge thank you to Virgin Trains who have agreed to sponsor the production costs of the CD’s!
So the recording is finally done and the artwork is almost finished…should be sending it off to be manufactured in a few days. With several performances in the pipeline over Christmas…it’s all getting very exciting! Best of all the proceeds will all be helping disabled children and young people and adults in Newcastle at Percy Hedley Foundation
Coming soon… a brand new recording of my Winter Carol…watch this space folks!
12.30-1pm All welcome!
